Advances in emergency lighting enable lighting specifiers and building owners to address new safety and energy regulations while integrating building automation. At lower lighting levels, redder lights should be used to preserve correct color perception. Otherwise your light will seem too harsh, and you actually see worse despite the apparent brightness. 5000 K bulbs are rarely suitable as general room lighting – they’re more of an office/workshop lighting, while living areas work best with 2800 – 3000 K and outdoor lighting even lower color temperatures because the overall intensity is often much less.

Alexander Whyte of Edinburgh had an assistant who took the second service for the aging pastor. Whyte was a surgical preacher who ruthlessly dealt with man’s sin and then faithfully proclaimed God’s saving grace. But his assistant was a man of different temperament, who tried to move the gospel message out of the operating room into the banqueting hall. However, during one period of his ministry he tried Whyte’s approach, but not with Whyte’s success. The experiment stopped when Whyte said to him, “Preach your own message.” That counsel is needed today.

One of the challenges is also the advantage, the unusual production method. The unique press porcelain technique allows fine precision details, alongside outstanding durability and insulation - characteristics perfectly suited for electro technical products. The technique requires great knowledge throughout all stages: construction, tooling and production - all phases are performed by skilled craftsmen. The fine tuning before starting the press is mandatory - like an orchestra tuning their instruments before a concert, the toolmaker goes over and puts together the press tool parts.

The lifetime of a bulb (or power supply) can be no longer than the lifetime of any of its components. Among the components found inside the bulbs, two stand out as life-limiters: the semiconductors and the electrolytic capacitors. Both of these components suffer from a failure rate that is a strong function of temperature. The typical model for this effect, based on the Arrhenius equation, predicts a doubling of lifetime for each 10 degree Celsius decrease in temperature, at least over a limited range.

The unreliable brands won’t go away, because they keep switching the brands, relying on the fact that they can sell at least a few batches before they are discovered as bad products.

The place to start is by installing intelligent emergency lighting components. Emergency LED luminaires are manufactured using semiconductors, which means the LED’s microcontroller-based driver enables the engine to be programmable (Fig. 2). Normally you would program LEDs to adjust their lighting characteristics, such as matching luminaire brightness, changing hue, metering energy consumption, making them dimmer or brighter, etc. For example, when retrofitting LED luminaires, it’s common to have to adjust brightness and hue to ensure the new units match older, existing luminaires. However, there is no reason you can’t program these same luminaires for other functions as well.

To replicate this effect indoors, place shaded or frosted-glass table lamps at eye level. Or consider a torchere, which is a floor lamp that shines light up at the ceiling the way the sun shines its light up as it dips into the horizon.

I’m accumulating a big collection of lighting solutions because I just can’t say no. My humble garage/workshop doesn’t need another drill, impact, or saw, but I usually won’t pass up a new light. I recently hit the Bosch lighting jackpot. I started with the Bosch GLI18V-420 for smaller scale work. Today, I’m looking at the bigger and brighter Bosch 1900-Lumen LED Work Light, the GLI18V-1900. If you’re thinking that’s a good bit of light, you’re right. I’m expecting a lot from it, so let’s see if this is an illuminating experience.
